Digitization of valuable seals in the Národní archiv – broadcast on the main news of CT1
The National Archives in Prague (Národní archiv) keeps the most important and valuable archival holdings in the Czech Republic – the Archives of the Bohemian Crown, which was proclaimed national cultural heritage.
The Archives of the Bohemian Crown contains 2 500 charters with appended seals, which are kept in a special safe. In 2005 the National Archives joined the EU-funded project ENArC (European Network on Archival Cooperation) to further expand Europe’s virtual charters archive Monasterium which was established in 2002 in Lower Austria as virtual archives of Medieval and Early Modern documents.
The charters of the Archives of the Bohemian Crown were scanned in the frame of this project in 2006. The project focused on scanning charters, but not the seals. Now the project has been extended to also digitize seals. This extension can be realized within the framework of the EU-funded co:op project and will be concluded in 2018.
